My Quest for 1:45

.

With the race starting at 6:30 AM it was dark when I arrived at the park and at start time the sun wasn’t up yet, the weather was perfect, no wind and cool. I started with gloves and a hat on but not for long. The field stretched out very quickly and I was surprised it wasn’t a faster start. After the first half mile there were only about fifty runners ahead of me. I felt good and tried to keep the pace down but I hit the first mile in 7:44 which was to fast, I wanted to run eight minute miles which would be a 1:45 half marathon. The race was an out and back with a very subtle up hill all the way out, not as easy as it looked. I passed the five mile mark in 40:35 thirty five seconds slow I was really looking forward to turning around and running down hill. Turned around at 53:34, 1:04 slow, picked up the pace coming back keeping the mile times at or just below eight minute miles but mile nine I could feel the pace slipping and was thinking “next year I need to run more in training”. Picked up the pace the last two miles finishing in 1:46:22 running the second half in 52:48 only 18 seconds off my target time for the second half. Running two minutes faster than last year and just missing my goal by 1:22. I took first place in my age group and finished 70th over all. My quest for a 1:45 half marathon is still alive and well, next year I will make it.

Thanks for pointing me to this site. There are a lot of interesting things to read. I'm looking to do some running while I visit Colorado Springs. Are there any places you'd recommend for a family with two young (9 & 11) kids to stay that's close to good running spots? My wife doesn't want me going off and leaving them - she has concerns about safety.
